Wipes, fades, dissolves and Jump cuts

Wipes, fades, Jump cut, and Dissolve

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVtSsJEbWDU&feature=plcp

The video I created above shows how wipes, fades, jump cuts and dissolves can be used effectively to tell a story.  If used incorrectly they can confuse an audience or the edits will become obvious for the wrong reasons.

For example if a scene were to fade to black during a conversation and then fade back to the conversation, this would confuse the audience. This is because fades symbolises the end to something whether this is the end of a scene or the end to a piece of action.

Fades are most commonly used when a scene is changing to show the change from one location to another. In my video I use the fades to show the start and end of the film. This was successful, as people understood what is happening.

Fades can also be used to show the audience something of importance.  In the clip below this technique is used to show this:

By fading out of an image it is giving the audience more time to think about what they have seen.  This is letting the audience know that they have seen something of importance.  Also by fading into something different afterwards it gets the audience trying to piece together what is happening and the importance between the two. The audience starts to think about what’s happening which is what the editor wants.

The Wipe was another editing technique that I used in the video.  The wipe symbolises the passing of time. For example in my video I used the wipe to show that time has passed since I went into the toilet to when I finally came out. Because of the wipe the audience don’t get confused to why I’ve just walked out of the toilet when I’ve only just gone in and understand what’s happened.  Depending on the editing software you use, you can use different types of wipes. In my video I used a wipe that looks like the hand on a clock going round. This again helps the audience understand that time has moved on.

Another way a wipe can be used is to show the passage of place. It shows this in the example below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRavD_AB8aA

This is a very different way of using this technique as it shows the Rocket man in one place before wiping and showing him in a different place. This shows not only that he is fast but also that he has super powers as well as it gives the effect of him being able to be in two places at once. It also gives the editors an opportunity to put the credits in as it wipes across the screen.

Also the wipes make it feel more like a comic book and that we are turning the page.  This is fitting as we stereotypically expect to see super heroes in comic books and this editing technique adds to this the super hero feel of the film.

Another edit that I used is Dissolve. This technique is rarely used amongst film editors in the industry but can be effective if used properly. It can give the effect of a dream sequence or can be used to show the passage of time.  In my video I used the dissolve to show a dream sequence of me thinking about something that’s happened in the past.  Its effective as the audience understand that we have gone to another time period and that the sequence is only a dream. The dissolve back to me at the end confirms to the audience that it was only a dream from a different time period.

The main purpose of creating this video is to show the use of Jump Cuts. Jump cuts create the feeling of tension, pressure, confusion and other similar emotions.  In the example I created I used jump cuts to show tension and the pressure of me needing the toilet. The fact that the scene jumps to lots of different shots missing action out shows the desperation of me needing the toilet and the confusion of not knowing where it is.  The jump cuts aren’t random but done so the action that is seen still tells the story even with pieces missing. As soon as I’ve found the toilet the jump cuts stop to show that the problem has been resolved.

A similar cut to the Jump cut is something called a Match cut. This is used to show the similarity between two different objects or actions.

A Match cut has been used instead of a wipe or a fade as they want to get across the speed of technology and how fast the human race is advancing compared to other species.  By ‘matching the bone and the space technology it emphasises how far we’ve gone and the speed in which were doing it.
